Why storms strengthen in the Gulf....

Both Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita became very strong as the crossed the Gulf of Mexico. This graphic from the Sun-Sentinel explains why: As hurricane traverse the Gulf of Mexico, they pick up strength when crossing over the Loop Current, a section of the Gulf Stream that carries warmer water from the Caribbean to the central Gulf of Mexico.
